Theodore Constant

Principal dancer, ballet master and choreographer, Theodore Constant has been artistic adviser to the National Ballet Theatre in Romania, artistic director of the Cologne Dance Academy in Germany and the OSC Dance Company in Canada, ballet director of the Northern California Dance Conservatory in the United States and ballet master at the Ballet Academy and Youth Company of the Vienna State Opera in Austria.

 

He is the founder and artistic director of Theodore Constant - Dance Academy, and the annual TCDA - International Ballet Festival in the United States, which celebrates its 11th anniversary in 2024. 

 

Mr. Constant is a frequent juror for major international ballet competitions and a sought after guest teacher and ballet master in professional schools and companies around the world. 

Theodor Constantinescu (Theodore Constant) was born into a family of musicians in Bucharest, Romania. His grandfather, Radu Constantinescu was the founder of the national philharmonic orchestra and opera in Yassy, Romania.

Theodore Constant attended the École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec in Montreal, Canada, where his principal teacher was Daniel Seillier of the Paris Opera. He also trained at Canada's National Ballet School and attended Collège du Vieux Montréal.

His professional career began with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal, Canada. He then performed in Germany with the Düsseldorf Opera Ballet, the Berlin State Opera Ballet and the Leipzig Opera Ballet, quickly rising through the ranks to become principal dancer. During this time, he also performed as a guest artist with other companies and toured in Russia, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Romania, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Japan and the United States.

Throughout his career, Théodore Constant performed in a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary ballets in which roles were created for him. He worked with choreographers such as Maurice Béjart, William Forsythe, Roland Petit, Uwe Scholz, Heinz Spoerli, Patrice Bart, Jorma Uotinen, and Hans van Manen among others.  

Mr. Constant holds diplomas in ballet pedagogy from Germany and the United Kingdom.

He is an internationally respected ballet teacher and coach, working with organizations such as: Sepmeroper Dresden Ballet, Romanian National Theatre, National Theater Brno, Zurich Dance Academy, Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera, Manhattan Youth Ballet, Joffrey Ballet School, Lisbon National Conservatory, and many more.

 

As a choreographer, his classical, neoclassical and contemporary creations have been produced in Germany, France, Austria, Japan, Canada and the United States.

His students are recipients of numerous international awards, such as the Gold Medal and the Award for Outstanding Artistry at Youth America Grand Prix - Finals, and the Ballet and Contemporary Awards at Prix the Lausanne. 

Graduates have joined dance Companies around the world: The Royal Ballet, Vienna State Opera Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Cullberg Ballet, Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, Hungarian National Ballet, La Scala Theatre of Milan, National Czech Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, National Ballet Bucharest, Royal Swedish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and many more.

Lectures and Master-Classes were organized by invitation of the Rumanian Parliament, and in universities and colleges in the United States.

Mr. Constant's credentials and interviews have been featured in numerous publications and media, such as Paris dance magazine "Danse", Copenhagen art magazine "Cultgrid", German magazine "Ballet International" and "Dance Magazine Europe".
