Theodore Constant

Principal dancer, ballet master, and choreographer Theodore Constant has held various esteemed positions, including artistic adviser to the National Ballet Theatre in Romania, artistic director of the Cologne Dance Academy in Germany and the OSC Dance Company in Canada, ballet director of the Northern California Dance Conservatory in the United States, and Ballet Master at the Ballet Academy and Youth Company of the Vienna State Opera in Austria.

 

As the founder and artistic director of Theodore Constant - Dance Academy, he established the annual TCDA - International Ballet Festival in the United States, which will commemorate its 13th anniversary in 2026.

 

Mr. Constant is a frequent juror for prestigious international ballet competitions and is sought after as a guest teacher and ballet master in professional companies and vocational schools globally.

Theodor Constantinescu, professionally known as Theodore Constant, was born into a family of musicians in Bucharest, Romania. His grandparents were concert-pianists. His grandfather, Radu Constantinescu was the founder of the State Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera in Iasi, Romania. and his father was solo-cellist, pianist, and composer.

He pursued his ballet training at the École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec in Montreal, Canada, where he received mentorship from Daniel Seillier, a principal dancer with the Paris Opera. He also received training at Canada’s National Ballet School and attended Collège du Vieux Montréal.

 

His professional ballet career commenced with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, Canada. Subsequently, he performed with the Düsseldorf Opera Ballet, the Berlin State Opera Ballet, and the Leipzig Opera Ballet, swiftly advancing to the rank of principal dancer. During this period, he also performed as a guest artist with other dance companies and embarked on tours throughout Russia, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Romania, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Japan, and the United States.

 

Throughout his illustrious career, Theodore Constant has showcased a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary ballets, including roles created specifically for him. He has collaborated with renowned choreographers such as Maurice Béjart, William Forsythe, Roland Petit, Uwe Scholz, Heinz Spoerli, Patrice Bart, Jorma Uotinen, and Hans van Manen.

 

Mr. Constant holds diplomas in ballet pedagogy from Germany and the United Kingdom.

 

He is an internationally thought-after ballet master and coach, collaborating with esteemed organizations such as the Semperoper Dresden Ballet, Romanian National Theatre, National Theatre Brno, Zurich Dance Academy, Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera, Manhattan Youth Ballet, Joffrey Ballet School, Lisbon National Conservatory, and numerous others.

 

As a choreographer, his classical, neoclassical, and contemporary creations have been premiered in Germany, France, Austria, Japan, Canada, and the United States.

 

His students have received numerous international accolades, including the Gold Medal and the Award for Outstanding Artistry at the Youth America Grand Prix Finals, as well as the Ballet and Contemporary Awards at Prix the Lausanne.

 

Graduates have successfully joined dance companies globally, including The Royal Ballet, Vienna State Opera Ballet, La Scala Theatre of Milan, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Cullberg Ballet, Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, Hungarian National Ballet, National Czech Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, National Ballet Bucharest, Royal Swedish Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, among others.

 

Invitations to lectures and masterclasses have been extended by the Romanian Parliament, as well as to universities and colleges in the United States.

 

Mr. Constant’s credentials and interviews have been featured in various publications and media outlets, such as the Paris dance magazine “Danse,” the Copenhagen art magazine “Cultgrid,” the German magazine “Ballet International,” and “Dance Magazine Europe.”
